Preserve, Restore wood parts
As the years go by and the weather turns, the wood gets rotten. That's why we expose the wood from the old paint and the rotten parts are replaced with new soft/hard wood. Then we apply a wood hardener over the entire surface of the wood and leave it for 24 hours to stop the process of rotting. After this process of exposure, extraction, replacement of rotten parts, we continue filling the holes, cracks with the best wood resin on the market
Draught Proofing
The genius of the sash window design was that it has built in draught proofing features such as the angled meeting bars. Over time and use the sash frames may become worn, which means the draught can infiltrate them and cause them to rattle in winds. Draught proofing beading can be fitted to help overcome this and increase energy efficiency to up to 80%.
Counterbalance weights and springs
A true counterbalance weight should each weight half of the weight of the sash frame they are counterbalancing. If this is the case then the window will slide up and down with a minimum of fuss. If the glass has been replaced with a modern replacement then it may be thicker than the original causing the frame to become heavier. This means more weight needs to be added to the counterbalance to function properly. Some sash windows also rely on a system of counterbalance springs instead of weights and they can wear out and require replacing.
Painted shut
Properly weighted sash windows should be able to slide up and down easily with little effort to open and close them. When houses are redecorated sometimes paint will get in between the sash frame and exterior box frame, which could result in the window becoming stuck and harder to operate. We can free up sealed windows again.
Demaged Putty seals and wood
Over the years the putty holding the glass into the frame may pull away allowing water to get inside the woodwork of the frame. Eventually this could result in the lower part of the frame rotting from the inside with the problem only being discovered and visible once the whole section is rotted through and requiring replacement.
If any of the wood around the window does become rotten it can be removed, the damage around the area stabilised and repairs made by splicing in new wood. We can also replace entire sections such as a sill or bottom rail.
Broken sash cords
Sash cords can become brittle over a long period of time especially if they are painted over during redecoration. They can snap causing problems for windows. They can also fray because of constant friction with the pulleys that the sash cords run over. They need replacing over the years too.
Repainting
Often overlooked but the single most important element of window maintenance is repainting them. Not only do the sills and frame look great but they are also protected for usually about five to seven years. This is when they should be repainted or whenever there have been any repairs.
Wood/Concrete Windowsill
We repair and replace the windowsill and we decorate as well.
